With work now underway along Veteran’s Memorial Highway for the eventual construction of a new stadium in Harbour Grace, one might wonder what will become of S.W. Moores Memorial Stadium.

At Wednesday night’s council meeting, Coun. Hayward Blake suggested the town should issue a request for proposals (RFP) this fall for the 57-year-old building. The issue came up at a recent economic development committee meeting.

“We had some discussion on the old stadium, as we’re referring to it now, and maybe the possibility that some time in the fall we might want to request an RFP to see who might be interested in that building,” he told fellow council members at the June 17 meeting.

According to Blake, the current timeline suggests the new $21.5-million facility will be ready for use by early 2017. That dollar figure is similar to the one linked to the original design proposed for the stadium. The Compass reported last June the projected cost was scaled down to $14 million.

Blake meanwhile hopes the old stadium might represent an opportunity for a business owner already in the community or someone from outside the area looking to start or expand a business.
