UPDATE: Three dead in highway accident on Veterans Memorial Highway

Bay Roberts RCMP has closed access to Veterans Memorial Highway between Makinsons and Roaches Line.

ROACHES LINE, NL — The Compass has confirmed three people were killed in a two-vehicle collision Monday on Veterans Memorial Highway.

The accident occurred early this afternoon between exits for Makinsons and Roaches Line. One female has been transported to hospital. The extent of her injuries is unknown.

The cause of the accident is not known, though water buildup on roads and highways throughout Conception Bay North has been considerable for days due to consistent rainy weather.

Bay Roberts RCMP has diverted traffic at both exits as emergency personnel remain at the accident scene. It is not known when traffic through the area will resume.

Bay Roberts RCMP is keeping traffic off Veterans Memorial Highway between Makinsons and Roaches Line as emergency personnel tend to the scene of a serious two-vehicle collision.

Motorists were being told to takes the exit leading to Makinsons Monday afternoon due to a serious two-vehicle accident.

An officer at the scene could not provide any details beyond those given in a news release earlier this afternoon. An ambulance was observed travelling north on the highway towards Carbonear.

The highway is extremely wet at this time, with rain falling consistently on Conception Bay North since Saturday. Police have not confirmed whether road conditions were a factor in the accident.

A serious two-vehicle accident has closed a section of Veteran’s Memorial Highway.

The affected area is located between Roaches Line and Makinsons.

The RCMP and emergency responders are on the scene.
