The provincial NDP is backing last week’s court decision requiring a full environmental impact statement (EIS) before Grieg NL’s proposed salmon aquaculture project in Placentia Bay can proceed.

In a news release, NDP Leader Earle McCurdy called the decision a significant victory for everyone who has been calling for such an assessment.

“We need jobs and development, but not at any cost,” he said.

McCurdy said the provincial government erred by not ordering the EIS last year, delaying the project for a year.
The EIS process should include public hearings and full participation by federal agencies concerned with the environment and fisheries, McCurdy said.

“If aquaculture is in fact to be a major source of employment in this province in future years, then we must make sure we do it right,” he said.

“The government ignored EIS Joint Review Panel recommendations in the Muskrat Falls development; let’s not make the same kind of mistakes here.”
