The company is spending $3.6 million in Grand Bank to increase grading and processing, improve infrastructure and expand production of additional value-added product formats.
Clearwater is also investing $2 million to turn its Highland Fisheries facility in Glace Bay, N.S. into a year-round operation. The plant, which currently processes crab on a seasonal basis, will add clam processing.
Grand Bank will continue to be Clearwater's primary clam-processing operation, with the Highland facility supporting the requirement for additional grading and packaging capacity.
Arctic surf clams are popular in sushi in Japan, China and South Korea.
“These new investments will enable Clearwater to better serve its traditional customer base while expanding distribution to new markets especially in Europe where sushi consumption is growing rapidly,” a company news release stated.
