Judge agrees to release men charged in New Harbour teen’s death

Two Conception Bay North men charged with street racing causing death were granted an interim judicial release late Tuesday afternoon in Harbour Grace.

Brian Robert King, left, and Steven Ryan Mercer appeared at Harbour Grace Provincial Court Monday afternoon.

Brian Robert King and Steven Ryan Mercer will each need to pay $5,000 before they can be released, and they will need to comply with a number of conditions. That includes having no contact with several witnesses in the case.

King, 30, and Mercer, 29, were arrested over the weekend following an investigation into a two-vehicle accident on the New Harbour Barrens that claimed the life of 18-year-old Hannah Thorne. Thorne, who is from New Harbour, was in one of those vehicles with her grandmother, who was injured.

Police alleged King and Mercer were street racing when the accident occurred.
