BAY ROBERTS, NL — In a year where incumbent mayoral candidates have not fared so well, Bay Roberts Mayor Philip Wood proved he still has plenty of supporters in his corner.

Wood defeated George Simmons Tuesday night in the mayor's race, attracting 1,580 votes to Simmons' 1,073.

"It's very humbling when people give you a vote of confidence," the mayor said when reached by The Compass shortly after 11:30 p.m. "I guess it shows that they approve of what you've been doing in your job as mayor, and I know I worked hard, and I'm very appreciative of the fact they have trusted me to sit in the mayor's chair for another four years."

There will be a number of familiar faces joining the mayor on council. Walter Yetman, Dean Franey and Wade Oates were reelected Tuesday, and they'll be joined on council this time around by Silas Badcock, Frank Deering and Geoff Seymour (the son of former councillor Bill Seymour). Incumbent candidate Charlene Dawe-Roach was unsuccessful in her bid for reelection.

"I'm looking forward to working together with this council," said Wood. "I think it's a good council."
