Man dead after shootout on Salmonier Line

It was anything but a peaceful Easter Sunday in the community of Mitchell’s Brook on the Salmonier Line.

The RCMP confirmed Sunday evening one man is dead following a shooting incident involving police at Mitchell’s Brook, located just south of Mount Carmel.

The RCMP said that about 2:30 p.m., a member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) was in the area of Mitchell’s Brook conducting followup inquiries for one of their investigations.

During that followup, something sparked a shooting incident, with a 59-year-old man being confirmed dead at the scene.

Officers from the Holyrood detachment of the RCMP were at the site conducting a post-shooting investigation Sunday.

Throughout the afternoon, the RCMP had the main road through the community cordoned off, as well as a house on the road.

Later Sunday evening, the CBC reported on its website that the RNC officer who was at the scene and involved in the shooting was investigating an alleged threat against Premier Paul Davis, and that the officer is a member of the premier’s personal security detail.

None of those details were confirmed by the RCMP as of Sunday evening.

The identity of the deceased man was not released pending notification of next of kin.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.
