There’s another animal rescue organization in the Stephenville area.

Citing the need for more help, the Southwest Coast chapter of the SPCA (SWC SPCA) was formed recently.

“It’s unfortunate that the plight of animals in the area is desperate enough to truly need another shelter,” Donna Hobbs, executive director of the organization said in a prepared release.

Currently, the Southwest chapter assists in housing stray animals on the southwest coast of Newfoundland, but if necessary, local pet owners requiring assistance with urgent re-homing of their animals may also avail of the services.

The group is currently seeking donations to find a building in the Stephenville-area to house the organization. Once the building is secured, the group hopes to qualify for government funding to help with the day-to-day operation of the facility.

Until then, the focus is to find homes, as well as funding to help with fostering animals and with veterinary bills.

“We ensure that any mature animals we place for adoption have been sterilized,” said Hobbs. “The greatest expense, aside from spaying and neutering, is the purchase of food and cat litter, so the SWC SPCA tries to help foster families offset these costs with donations from local citizens and organizations.”

Over time, the group hopes to increase awareness of what the organization does and educate people about the importance of having their pet spayed or neutered,

Besides the need of a shelter, the group is always in need of donations ranging from food, cat litter and dishes to blankets, beds and volunteers.

“Animals aren’t able to advocate for themselves. They are born helpless and innocent. Everyone can’t adopt, but everyone can help,” said Hobbs. “When you open your heart to an animal in need it can be extremely rewarding and fulfilling.”
