Published on June 9, 2014

A woman suspected of making a threat that forced a St. John’s school to close early today has a long history of breaking the law.

Nancy Hart, 49, was arrested late this morning after she reportedly made a threat to Bishop Field Elementary.

Hart has been charged with uttering threats and mischief relating to property. She’s scheduled to appear in provincial court Tuesday morning.

Hart is a Long-Term Offender under a 10-year supervision order. In 2000, she was sentenced to a 40-month federal jail term for committing a number of offences.

Her criminal record includes several convictions for sexual assault, assault, mischief and triggering a false fire alarm.

Police informed school administration at Bishop Field Elementary this morning about the threat. The school went into secure mode and asked parents and guadians to come pick up students. All students managed to leave the school before noon.

An official with Newfoundland and Labrador English School District has said the school will reopen Tuesday.

Update: Woman arrested after St. John's school receives threat

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has confirmed that a 49-year-old has been arrested in connection to a threat at a St. John's school.

Const. Steve Curnew could not confirm whether the woman has a child at Bishop Feild Elementary or what the nature of the threat was.

Parents and guardians were told to pick up children at the school Monday morning. All had left the school prior to noon, with the last few students leaving by bus.

Parents who spoke with The Telegram prior to leaving the school said they were initially nervous about the situation, but said the matter was handled well.

RNC investigators are still at the school. An official with the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District told reporters the school will reopen Tuesday.

Further details about the arrest are expected later today.
