Driver charged with DUI, dangerous driving after passenger dies in Stephenville Crossing truck crash

A 70-year-old man died Sunday night after a single-vehicle crash on Brook Street in Stephenville Crossing.

The Bay St. George RCMP received a report about the crash around  9:30 p.m. Sunday. There were three occupants in a Ford F150 pick up truck, which left the road after failing to negotiate a turn.

 When police arrived, emergency personnel and the Stephenville Crossing Fire Department were at the scene. Shortly before 10 p.m., one of the passengers from Stephenville Crossing was pronounced deceased.

 The second passenger, a 53-year-old man from the same area was not injured.

 RCMP Traffic Services West responded to assist with the investigation.

 The driver of the pick up truck, a 62-year-old man from Barachois Brook is currently in police custody facing three charges — impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, operation of a motor vehicle causing death with blood alcohol above the legal limit, and dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.

 The accused will appear in Stephenville provincial court on Tuesday.
