ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The provincial government reduced the deficit by roughly 0.13 per cent on Thursday afternoon by eliminating 15 positions among the senior ranks of the civil service.

In a news release late in the afternoon, the government announced the job cuts amount to about 20 per cent of the senior executives at the assistant deputy minister level.

“These changes will result in a more defined focus on delivery of programs and services to the people of the province,” the news release stated.

This is the second cull that the Liberal government has done among the top management ranks of the civil service. In August the government sacked five deputy ministers.

The government news release didn’t say which positions were eliminated.
