As we paid the cashier, we noticed tickets for sale on a huge Christmas stocking with items inside. The proceeds were for charity, so we bought some tickets for the cause.
Now I was feeling low at times, because I didn't have much money to buy gifts to give my family, like I usually do. I didn't even have any baking done and no extra groceries.
But all that changed during the Christmas week when I received a phone call that informed me I was the lucky winner of that stocking.
I couldn't believe I'd been so fortunate, especially when we really needed it. They say sometimes people win things and don't need it. Well in this case, it was completely different. Imagine not having things to give your family?
When I went to bring the items home, the back seat and trunk of my car was full. I felt so overjoyed, I told the girl with tears in my eyes. I told her I had three grandchildren - two boys and a baby girl. She said most of the toys in there were for boys.
I also have children with spouses. And I didn't have a cake made. Included were many items for my grandsons, and my new little granddaughter born in July.
There was a cordless phone for my daughter, as hers was out of service. Also, many household items.
I didn't have an electronic kettle, so there was one for me to use, plus other household items.
A drill we gave to our good friend who takes care of our snow removal. There was some bedding plus new pillows that my son could use for his apartment. There were also three cakes. One was even iced that I shared with some friends.
When my family and grandchildren visited, I was so thankful that I could give them those gifts. Most even had Christmas cards with them and were also beautifully wrapped.
I will never be able to tell you how I really felt when I began unwrapping those wonderful gifts from strangers. So I would like to thank everyone who donated to this worthwhile cause and let them know how it made a real good Christmas for this family who were in desperate need.
I even had a gift certificate for a fresh turkey - something I never tasted before. We even had a vegetable hamper for our Christmas dinner.
When we sat down for Christmas dinner as a family, we gave extra thanks. It was an extra special Christmas.
