The Bay Arena midget B Rovers faltered in its bid for a second straight home tournament championship over the weekend.

The Rovers were soundly defeated by the visiting Bonavista Cabots 10-2 in the championship match at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts on March 16.

The tournament also featured the Trinity-Placentia TeePees and the CeeBees. Marystown were scheduled to appear but pulled out days before the games started.

The Cabots were led by star Conal McNamara. The strapping Port Union resident beat was a force all game for Bonavista and the Rovers defenders had trouble containing the six-foot-one forward.

McNamara registered five goals and one assist in the victory. Joining his name on the scoresheet was Nathaniel Duffett (3), Mark Butler and Jonathan Pilgrim.

Willy Hayes and Daniel Moore replied for the Rovers.

Jonathan Freake took the win in goal, while Clarke was saddled with the loss.

Heading into the matchup, some observers believed the Rovers had a game designed to give Bonvista fits and the chance to steal a game on home ice.

However, the Cabots used a four-goal first period to halt any notions of an upset. It was 5-0 before the Rovers picked up two quick goals to make things interesting.

But minutes after Moore scored to make it 5-2, Bonavista rattled off three straight makers to effectively seal the deal.

Smelling blood in the water, the Cabots registered two more goals in the third period.

The Rovers booked their ticket to the finals with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over the imposing Trinity Placentia TeePees.

Bay Arena did a good job of shutting down standout Lyndon Thorne for 60 minutes, however the Rovers still fell behind two-goals early.

Trinity Placentia’s Tyler Clarke and Cole Thorne made it 2-0 TeePees inside of the first five minutes of action in the first period.

Trinity Placentia would maintain the two nothing advantage until Brandon Smith beat TeePees’ starter Tyler Wrice at 10:17 of the second period.

Nick Bradbury would restore the two-goal advantage before the Rovers registered two goals before the end of the period to even the score up at 3-3 after 40 minutes. Devin Lidster and Jordan Jones scored for Bay Arena.

In the third, Jones and Willy Hayes scored for the Rovers to make the score 5-3.

In the round robin, the Rovers finished with a record of one win (CeeBees) and two losses (Trinity-Placentia, Bonavista).

Other locals

The TeePees finished the competition in third place after dropping the semifinal match against the Rovers.

Trinity-Placentia posted a record of two wins (CeeBees, Bay Arena) versus one loss (Bonavista) for the second best round robin record behind Bonavista (3-0).

Meanwhile, the CeeBees midget squad went winless.
