A pair of athletes from Baccalieu Collegiate in Old Perlican medaled at the recent Provincial Badminton Championships held at Glovertown Academy May 9-11.

Males doubles partners Morgan Eddy and Andrew Parsons fell just short in their bid for a provincial title when they were defeated by the hometown team of Dean and Mackenzie Parsons of Glovertown Academy.

It was a narrow defeat for the Baccalieu duo, who would settle for silver.

In the female singles’ division, Baccalieu’s Kylie Squires was narrowly defeated (21-10,21-15) by Jessica Watkins of Glovertown Academy for the bronze medal.

There were three other Baccalieu athletes involved in the tournament.

Omir Noonan and Anne Montgomery bowed out of the mixed doubles event in the first round, while Avery Ash did the same in the male singles competition.

Badminton is a sport that rewards team and individual play.

Baccalieu Collegiate finished the round robin portion of the event with a record of three wins and one loss.

The team opened up the tournament with a 5-0 loss to Glovertown. That was followed by a 5-0 defeat of William Gillette Academy of Charlottetown.

St. Lawrence Academy was up next for Baccalieu. The Predators handily defeated their opponents 5-0.

The final round robin game for Baccalieu was a nail biter. Facing Jakeman All Grade of Trout River.

The school needed a victory in the mixed doubles division to advance, which is exactly what they got for the 3-2 victory.

This record was good enough to push Baccalieu into the semifinal round, where the team was defeated 4-1 by J.C. Erhardt Memorial of Makkovik.
