The popular Targa Newfoundland road race will see the addition of two Trinity Conception towns this year — Cupids and Whitbourne.
In a news release Thursday, a Targa spokesperson announced that the two municipalities will join Conception Bay South as the newest routes on the Avalon Peninsula. Little Catalina, Champney’s East and English Harbour on the Bonavista Peninsula will also join the race.
Last year the Town of Carbonear pulled out of the race, and Freshwater, Conception Bay, will not be on the map this year.
Brigus, which has been a highlight for the event in recent years, will also still participate.
“We are particularly looking forward to the addition of the Cupids stages, which, when combined with the longtime popular Brigus stages, provides a wonderful climax to the 2015 event,” said Targa president Robert Giannou. “And these stages will be hosted in, and by, what are two of the most historic communities in our province, if not in all of North America.”
Targa will take place between September 13 to 18, starting in St. John’s. It will cover over 440 kilometres of closed roads and will bring dozens of drivers and vehicles from all over North America.
