Gander native Blair Bursey chipping away amongst world’s best
GANDER, NL – Following a fourth-place finish at the prestigious Sahalee Players Championship, amateur golfer Blair Bursey is enjoying some time off in his native Gander.
Members of the Old Mills Lanes team that represented Newfoundland and Labrador at the Bowl Canada Cup Bowling Championships in Winnipeg — Sylvia Greeley, Pat Dawson, Robin McLean, Carole Saunders and Margaret Dawe.
WINNIPEG, MB — With a national title on the line and a tough opposing group not giving an inch, some Bay Roberts bowlers dug deep and found a way to win.
Representing Old Mill Lanes in Bay Roberts, Team Newfoundland and Labrador defeated Alberta 1,281-1,258 over the weekend in a double-life championship game for the Bowl Canada Cup Bowling Championship. The event is a national championship for house league teams and is handicapped to determine which clubs face off against each other.
The team from Bay Roberts — featuring Margaret Dawe, Pat Dawson, Sylvia Greeley, Robin McLean and Carole Saunders — found itself in first place after 10 games in the qualifying round of the tournament. This gave the Newfoundland a double-life advantage heading into the title match.
Alberta upset the second-place team from Quebec in order to meet Newfoundland and Labrador in the final. Newfoundland held a 44-point lead after eight frames, with the lead narrowing to seven with one bowler for each team left in the 10th.
Alberta pulled through at this stage, forcing the double-life championship game. The teams were tied heading into the 10th and final frame, with timely strikes helping Newfoundland secure the victory.
