ST. JOHN'S, NL — Placentia were under-16 champions in boys fastpitch softball action at the 2017 Constable William Moss Memorial Fastpitch Tournament.

Placentia routed Goulds 10-1 in the championship game played July 6 at Lions Park in St. John's, with pitcher Marcus Pittman earning Mary Brown's Player of the Game honours for the winning team.

Pittman had a hot hand at the tournament. Earlier in round-robin play, he threw a five-inning no hitter against Goulds, propelling the team to a 9-0 victory.

Placentia defeated Carbonear 7-0 in the semis prior to facing Goulds in the championship matchup. In round-robin action, Placentia lost to Goulds 8-4 and tied C.B.S. at two-runs-apiece after earlier shutting the team out by a score of 2-0.

The tournament is named after William Moss, a police offer killed in the line of duty during a woodworkers strike in Badger on March 12, 1959.
