GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, NL — A Bay Roberts team proved to be better than the rest at a recent high school hockey tournament in central Newfoundland.
The Ascension Collegiate Astros boys hockey team shutout the Gander Collegiate Concordes in the final of the 2018 Donnini's Invitational Sunday afternoon, winning 4-0. The Astros earned a spot in the championship game earlier that day by defeating Holy Trinity High 4-1 in the semis.
In round-robin action, Ascension lost once in four games. The team opened the tournament with a 5-5 tie against Gander Collegiate and then defeated the O'Donel Patriots 4-1.
Following a tight 3-2 loss to the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers, the Astros rebounded nicely to beat the Holy Heart of Mary Highlanders 4-0, earning the team a spot in the playoffs.
