BAY ROBERTS, N.L. — The Ascension Astros boys hockey team was victorious in a nail bitter, winning 5-4 versus O’Donel High School in the championship game to claim the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador 4A Boys Varsity Ball Hockey Provincials.

Playing in the school gymnasium at Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts, the boys team proved to be a tough opponent throughout the three-day tournament, held May 3-5.

The victory in the championship game proved to be an act of revenge for the Astros, who lost their opening game of the tournament by a score of 6-5 against O’Donel. Ascension bounced back quickly to dominate Gander Collegiate, blowing out the central Newfoundland team 13-3.

On May 4, the Astros shut out Stephenville High 10-0, then beat Menihek High School 9-2 to finish round-robin play with a 3-1 win-loss record. Ascension defeated Mount Pearl Senior High 8-6 in the semis May 5 to set up the championship matchup against O’Donel.

Astros player Dawson Laundry was the recipient of the team’s Most Sportsmanlike Player Award for the tournament.
