Carbonear, Bay Roberts high schools medal at Marystown hockey tournament

MARYSTOWN, NL — The Carbonear Collegiate and Ascension Collegiate girls hockey teams were in fine form at a recent tournament in Marystown.

The Ascension Collegiate Astros girls team claimed the bronze in Marystown. The Carbonear and Bay Roberts high schools were among four represented at the two-day tournament, held Jan. 6-7 at Katelyn Osmond Arena.

The Carbonear Collegiate Sentinels made it all the way to the gold medal game, losing 3-0 to the host team from Marystown Central High School. To make it there, the Sentinels defeated their rivals from Bay Roberts 3-1, with Sammi Jo Haire, Hailee Hoyles and Rhiannon Kelly supplying the goals for the winning team.

Ascension fared well in the bronze medal game, shutting out Botwood Collegiate 4-0. In the round-robin portion of the tournament, the Astros won twice and lost once. Among those wins was a tight 1-0 shootout win over Carbonear Collegiate. The Sentinels won one game and lost two in round-robin play.
