Gander Flyers sign on for another hockey season

Regardless of how things played out in the Avalon East division, Gander Flyers general manager Garry White says there will be hockey in central Newfoundland this season.

Originally, the Central West Senior Hockey League (CWSHL) was looking to pick up the Harbour Grace Ocean Enterprises CeeBee Stars after the team was kicked out of the Avalon East Senior Hockey League (AESHL).

That would have rounded out a four-team league.

However, a ruling from Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador has placed the CeeBee’s back into the Avalon East league. The four other teams in the league have since resigned.

White couldn’t speak to the affairs of another league but has confirmed the Flyers are ready to proceed. The process of building the team and securing sponsorship is underway, he said.

While the CWHL will be established as a three-team league, the Flyers are looking to square off against six teams this season.

“We are awaiting official approval from HNL, but four teams from the (former AESHL) have struck a tentative agreement with the Central West league to play a game each against the central teams,” he said. “The St. John’s Caps, Northeast Eagles, Southern Shore Breakers, and Conception Bay South Blues have agreed to come to Gander for one game each – the same for the two other (CWSHL) teams.”

If signed off on, it will mean a 20-game season for the Flyers, with 16 games against the Cataracts and Caribous and four against the eastern teams.

The schedule will be broken up into 12 home games and eight away.
