FOGO ISLAND, NL – Fogo Islanders player Jeff Neil says the March 17 event with the Montreal Canadiens alumni exceeded all expectations.
“It really was above and beyond; everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves,” said Neil.
As part of the event, the Fogo Islanders faced off against the alumni team at the Iceberg Arena. Neil says playing against the former-NHLers was certainly a fun experience for them and the local audience.
“They toyed with us for sure,” Neil said with a laugh. “They’re still really good. A couple of the younger guys are not far off the mark from being removed from the NHL.
“I think the final score was 17-4, and they pretty much let us have those four goals.”
Younger players around Fogo Island also got to play on the ice with the Montreal alumni. As well, long-time player and Tilting local Roy Dwyer got to see his jersey retired.
“We retired his jersey in honour of his dedication to the sport,” said Neil.
The alumni team were also given a tour around Fogo Island, during which they happened to come across a herd of over 150 caribou.
