LABRADOR WEST, N.L. — It was a great day at the Labrador West Regatta if you don’t count afternoon thundershowers that delayed the Ladies championship races by several hours.
Regular races got underway at 8 a.m. With favourable conditions there was some good competition, and at times close results.
In the Senior Men’s race Work Out World placed first with a time of 5:05:30. Grenfell Electric was close behind with a time of 5:05:71. ESSO placed third in that race with a time of 5:09:71.
There was one Masters men’s team, Labrador Rewinding, and the remainder of the regular races included Senior Ladies, which made up the majority of the races this year, and Intermediate Ladies.
After lunch it was time for semi-finals and the championship races.
“The races went well, we had an interruption because of thunder and lightning but we managed to complete the races with no incidents,” Harold Clarke of the Labrador West Rowing Association said.
Clarke also mentioned it was a good day for the people who were operating the concessions as many of them sold out.
Clarke said the Regatta has become a great event for the Labrador West communities of Wabush and Labrador City and the support of both towns, the many volunteers, community groups and sponsors make it all happen.
Also awarded was the Laurie (Campbelton) Hart Award.
The idea for the award came from Sid Casmey, and is designed to honour somebody who has put a lot of dedication to the sport of rowing in Labrador West.
“Casmey called the award after long-time rower, volunteer and promoter of the sport Laurie Campbelton, who has been rowing more than 25 years, and still is,” Clarke said.
The award went this year to Sarah Hearn, who in her five years on the lake has been dedicated, always ready to help others, fill in when needed, and always does so with a smile.
Awards presentations and celebrations were held Saturday, July 28.
