GANDER, NL — The Laval Cavaliers dug deep in the championship game of a girls basketball tournament in Gander this past weekend.

Regulation time solved nothing, sending the Placentia school and Exploits Valley High of Grand Falls-Windsor to overtime. Laval prevailed in what proved to be a thrilling 66-64 victory in the final of the McDonald's Classic tournament.

The result was especially satisfying for Laval in light of the opponent. In round-robin action Saturday, Exploits Valley High soundly defeated Laval 67-49.

But that was the only blemish in the team's record for the two-day tournament. Laval opened Friday with a 61-28 win over Stephenville High, and then beat Riverwood Academy from Wing's Point 62-26.

With two wins and one loss in round-robin action, the Cavaliers advanced to a semi-final matchup against Riverwood, once again winning handily by a final score of 68-26. That result set up Saturday's rematch with Exploits Valley High.
