Two students from a Bay Roberts high school returned with medals from a national Skills Canada competition in Halifax.

Brianna Russell and Laura Keefe were among 13 high school and post-secondary students from Newfoundland and Labrador to medal at the 2019 Skills Canada National Competition. Russell won a gold medal in the secondary-level job search event, while Keefe claimed a bronze in the job skill demonstration event. They both won gold medals in the same events at March's provincial competition in St. John's.

The national competition was May 27-30, with 47 students representing Team Newfoundland and Labrador. There were 550 competitors taking part in events that celebrate excellence in trade, technology and employability skill areas.

“Team Newfoundland and Labrador showed Canada the strength of training in our province and proudly brought home 13 national medals,” said Carole Ann Ryan, executive director for Skills Canada Newfoundland & Labrador, in a news release.

Team Newfoundland and Labrador also claimed the Team Spirit Award for the second year in a row.
