WABUSH, N.L.

All that time spent in the gym growing up in Labrador West really paid off for Sean Barker.

Not only was he pursuing his own healthy lifestyle, but those formative years helped the Wabush native continue on a healthy path that led him to enjoy the success he is experiencing today.

Barker has published a book he believes makes healthy eating easy and will help people lose weight and keep it off for the long-term.

Sean Barker’s book, “The Easy Eating Diet”, is among the top three new releases, in three different categories, on Amazon Canada.

The book “The Easy Eating Diet” (released in September) is among the top three new releases, in three different categories, on Amazon Canada.

According to Barker, the book is for people who are tired of diets. His methods are based on proven principles, simple science and healthy hacks in behaviour change, he said.

About the author

Barker’s parents Kevin and Bessie Barker raised their family in Labrador West. They now live in Bloomfield, Bonavista Bay.

“My father got me interested in fitness when he started working out at our local gym,” Barker said of his teenage years in Labrador West.

There’s information in the book about Barker’s Dad and why he became interested in fitness.

After starting to work out, Baker developed not only a passion for fitness, but an interest in nutrition and healthy eating.

Career

He started training as a bodybuilder and in 2001 competed in a provincial body building contest in St. John’s.

More doors opened when he earned an endorsement contract after clinching second place in a magazine transformation contest.

“I began to realize this was the direction I’d like to go in terms of what I wanted to do as a career,” Barker said.

“I moved away for a bit for school then came back (to Labrador West) and worked with the mines for about 10 years right alongside my father, but on the side I was still training people and training myself,” he said.

Barker and his wife Kathy — also from Labrador West — sold their home in Labrador City in 2010 and moved to New Brunswick where Barker now owns and operates a fitness franchise, KV Fit Body Boot Camp.

Having a passion for writing since his school years, Barker is a contributing writer for numerous websites and fitness publications including “Men’s Health” and “Inside Fitness” magazine.

Over the past two decades he has travelled extensively to learn more about exercise and nutrition from the best in the fitness industry.

He has presented at industry events on numerous occasions and in 2015 and 2018. He was nominated for Personal Trainer of the Year at Fitness Business Summit in California.

Publishing

Barker said he’s always wanted to write and publish a book and has spent over a year-and-a-half working on “The Easy Eating Diet” which is self-published through Tellwell Talent.

“I’d get up at 3:30 or 4 in the morning before the kids would wake up (Barker and his wife have a son and daughter) and spend an hour or so writing,” he said. “There are 23 years of my experience put into that book.”

Barker uses the term “paralysis by analysis” in talking about all of the information that’s out there on the internet, much of which isn’t reliable, he says.

His book suggests to readers what they need to know about fitness and nutrition and how to incorporate both into their everyday lives.

There are also mental and motivational strategies to help readers stay on track as well as lifestyle stories and information on health issues that Barker once faced.

“I want to educate people and empower them to help them realize that they are not broken and that, with the help of a (fitness) coach or even using the book — I want to show them how to enjoy eating food and also how to get and stay fit,” he said.

Barker noted, it’s not what you know that’s important, it’s what you do with that knowledge.

Everybody has their own journey, Barker said, and he’s optimistic his book will give readers both clarity and confidence moving forward in their lives.

“No matter where you are, or what you want to accomplish, never give up. If it’s important to you, you’ll find a way,” he said.
