Something for everyone

ST. ANTHONY, N.L. —

It’s Come Home Year in St. Anthony, and preparations are underway to welcome people back to the community July 20-26.

Planning such a big event isn’t new to the community. Similar celebrations took place in 2012 and 2015, said planning committee chairperson Marilyn Walker.

Planning for the 2019 event has been underway for over a year, she said.

Initially, when the call was put out to see who would support such an event, Walker said, more than 1,100 people showed interest. Over 700 have registered.

“And other people are going to take in some of the events as well,” she said.

Walker said the planning committee is thankful to the local legion branch, which has partnered with them for the Come Home Year activities. Many of the events are set to take place at the legion.

This year’s activities include everything from a gospel concert to an open mic to row boat competitions to dances for young and old alike.

There will be a scenic walk and a memorial tribute to loved ones who have passed away, Walker said.

“We have Valentine activities for the kids and a bonfire, we have a bingo,” she said.

No Come Home Year in this province would be complete without a Newfie scoff, and those in the St. Anthony area during the week of the celebrations can enjoy a traditional home-cooked meal during a supper at the Legion on July 24.

From a local band returning to its roots to a CCR tribute band, Greenriver Revival, from Toronto, there will be plenty of music, food and friendship.

Local businesses will benefit from the events, Walker said, and activities are planned for people of all ages.

“We have something for everybody for the whole week. People can’t wait to get home."
