The Holy Name of Mary Academy Mustang Megabots from Lawn captured first place at the F.I.R.S.T Lego League (FLL) Robotics Competition in St. John’s Saturday, Nov. 24.
Sixteen teams from the province participated in the competition.
The theme this year was “Into Orbit.”
Each team had to prepare a project in which they had to come up with a problem astronauts face and then find a solution for it.
The title of the Megabots project was “Stressed Out.” They searched things that cause astronauts to be stressed and decided to create a video astronauts could take with them in space to help them relax.
This video includes things such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing and mindfulness. The judges were impressed with the project and thought it was an innovative idea.
Another portion of the competition is to program a robot to complete missions. The Mustang Megabots were able to program six of these missions. During the day each team gets five heats in which they must try to accumulate the most points in a time limit of two and a half minutes.
The Megabots have been working hard over the past three months and all their hard work paid off.
They worked successfully as a team using the FLL core values of gracious professionalism and cooperation and took home gold. The Mustang Megabots have made both their school and community proud.
