Ceremony held at War Memorial

ST. ANTHONY, N.L. —

On each July 1, a contingent, including the local Royal Canadian Legion, air cadets, sea cadets, veterans, servicemen and servicewomen and family members, march to commemorate Memorial Day in St. Anthony.

The parade departs from the St. Mary's Anglican Church and walks down the road on East Street to the war memorial located at the Royal Canadian Legion. There, wreaths are laid to pay respects.

Memorial Day honours those were killed in the First Newfoundland Regiment on July 1, 1916 at Beaumont Day. On that day, the regiment was almost entirely wiped out with only 68 men answering the roll call.
