Whiteway welcomes Canada's 150th

WHITEWAY, NL — Residents of the Trinity South community of Whiteway were out in full force to honour the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation.

Parents and children take part in Whiteway's Canada Day bicycle parade.

The day started with a children's bike parade from Drover's Store to the Whiteway Memorial Centre at 10:30 a.m. There, a Memorial Day ceremony was held to honour the sacrifice of Newfoundlanders killed in the Battle of Beaumont Hamel on July 1, 1916.

Shana and Dillon Brown of the folk duo Shillon led the crowd in the singing of the "Ode to Newfoundland" and "O' Canada," and later served as entertainment during a lunch of soup and sandwiches provided by Whiteway Recreation.

The event was capped off with the annual cutting of the Canada Day cake, jointly handled by the community's oldest and youngest residents. This year, 91-year-old Millie George and infant Avery Mahoney (helped by mom Stacy Chislett) looked after the cake cutting.
