CARBONEAR, NL — Members of the Carbonear Volunteer Fire Dept. had a busy day handling fires in the area.
On Tuesday afternoon, the brigade responded originally to a call near Gunners Pond, however along the way received a second call at approximately 12:45 p.m. about a forest fire along Forest Road in Carbonear.
Adam Earle, 1st Assistant Chief for the department told The Compass he sent a small crew to handle the Gunners Pond call while focusing the majority of their manpower on the Forest Road call, adding that the fire had the potential to get dangerously close to buildings, such as some nearby homes, as well as Carbonear Collegiate.
The brigade made sure to keep the fire under control while they waited on a water bomber to douse the flames. During that time, students at Carbonear Collegiate were evacuated from their classrooms, but were sent back when the perceived threat of the fire had been dealt with.
Earle noted that there was no damage done to any nearby buildings, and the crew had finished cleaning the area around 4:00 that evening.
