HOLYROOD, N.L. —

A 24-year-old woman from Ontario is facing charges under the province’s highway traffic act after being caught traveling at speeds of nearly 200 km/h on the Trans Canada Highway last Thursday night.

Just before 8 p.m., a member of the Holyrood RCMP detachment already stopped at the emergency turnaround at Thomas Pond observed a white Mercedes pass him in the westbound lane at a very high rate of speed.

Once in pursuit, the officer’s radar obtained a reading of 195 km/h. The driver attempted to evade police but she was unable to get away due to heavy traffic on the road ahead, allowing police to successfully pull her over.

The woman is charged with speeding more than 51 km/h over the posted speed limit and with imprudent driving. Her license was suspended for seven days and her vehicle was seized and impounded.
