Local tourism organization gets federal funds

A Carbonear-based tourism organization whose work spans multiple peninsulas in Newfoundland is getting help from the federal government to implement a multi-year plan.

Legendary Coast of Eastern Newfoundland — also known as the Eastern Destination Management Organization (EDMO) — will receive $222,700 through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). The federal government announced the funding Monday.

Those funds will be used to help implement a three-year tourism development plan. That work will involve attending trade shows, conducting tours, networking, and assessing marketing readiness and destination development within the regions EDMO serves.

Those regions cover the Burin, Bonavista and Avalon peninsulas, excluding the St. John’s metro area. EDMO represents the interests of tourism stakeholders.

ACOA is also providing funds to three similar organizations operating within the province — Central Destination Marketing Organization Inc., Western Newfoundland Destination Management Organization, and Destination Labrador.
