Police asking drivers to slow down on Veterans Memorial Highway near Roaches Line

BAY ROBERTS, N.L. —

Ongoing road construction on the Veterans Memorial Highway near Roaches Line is causing a safety concern for flag persons and others who are working in the area.

The Veterans Memorial Highway is closed from Roaches Line to Makinsons daily between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the exception of Sundays, for road construction that is expected to take place for an undetermined amount of time.

Speed limits for northbound traffic near Roaches Line are reduced to 50 kms/hr. Traffic is to take a detour from the Veterans Memorial Highway onto Roaches Line. Flag persons are on scene directing traffic to slow down and at times to stop.

Police are receiving reports of motorists who are not slowing down in the area or who are failing to stop for the flag persons.

Bay Roberts RCMP are patrolling the area for enforcement purposes and reminds the motoring public that it is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to fail to obey a person with a flag or sign and that speeding in a construction zone is accompanied by fines that are doubled.
