CARBONEAR, N.L. — An issue with the structural integrity of a retaining wall in Carbonear forced the town to close off public access to a section of its boardwalk trail.

The wall in question is located on High Road South, not far from where that road meets Powell Drive.

“People have noticed that walk, the boardwalk, we had a section of the retaining wall right at the beginning of High Road South and Lower Southside Road that was bulging out and poles are leaning,” public works director Brian O’Grady told Carbonear council members at a regular meeting held Tuesday, May 8. “We’ve been monitoring it and keeping measurements and whatnot, but it did move a bit more recently, so we’ve closed that section of the boardwalk. We’ve removed the boardwalk and we’ve now removed a lot of the poles from that embankment so we can better assess what’s required.”

O’Grady said his department will investigate and determine the best option to proceed with in restoring and fixing the retaining wall, noting that work is already in progress.
