Musgravetown church prayer shawl ministry honours veterans

MUSGRAVETOWN, N.L. — Heritage United Church in Musgravetown honoured veterans in the community in a unique way at a ceremony on Friday, Oct. 26.

Just over 40 knit shawls were presented to veterans in the area, with about six more to be presented in the near future.

Twenty-eight veterans were in attendance to receive their shawl, with family members representing those who could not make the event.

“It is indeed a pleasure for us to present our veterans with these items,” said Violet Parsons, chair of the Prayer Shawl Ministry, as she addressed the crowd of about 150 in attendance. “The hours we put into creating your gift is nothing compared to the gift veterans such as yourselves gave, and continue to give us.

“We are so grateful to you folks. You are never forgotten. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.”

Veteran Eli Bowen said, “For the ladies to do this, it took a lot of effort on their part. And for us to be recognized for what we did, is certainly very special.”

Bowen added, “As for Remembrance Day, for me, I joined back in the ‘50s, when a lot of serving members were World War II vets and Korean War vets. To me, it’s very special, because I remember these people, and what they did, and I understand some of their stories. You got to understand what they went through.”
