Holyrood composting facility no longer on the table

An environmental review of a possible new industrial composting facility in Holyrood has been halted.

According to the provincial Department of Environment, Metro Environmental Services has withdrawn its proposal for a composting facility for industrial organic waste, including mink farm offals, dead poultry and livestock waste.

As reported, the company suggested the site would allow for the cheaper disposal of organic waste, being located outside of St. John’s in particular. It was planning to earn revenue from tipping fees and the sale of an end-of-process fertilizer.

But the proposed location was not far from the intersection of Route 90 and the Trans-Canada Highway, within the Holyrood town boundaries, and the town issued objections to the project, based on the application, after discovery of a zoning issue.
