Polar bear fatally shot on Fogo Island

Fogo Island RCMP were required to shoot a polar bear that had wandered into the community of Deep Bay, Fogo Island this morning.

At approximately 9:30 this morning, RCMP responded to a call of a polar bear swimming in the harbour at Deep Bay. RCMP and Fisheries and Oceans officers responded and found the bear coming ashore near the community’s wharf.

RCMP officers moved bystanders back and fired a warning shot in hopes of scaring the bear away but the bear continued to advance, approaching officers and bystanders. An RCMP officer was required to shoot the bear out of safety concerns for those in the area.

While en route to the incident, RCMP officers consulted with a conservation officer from the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. They remained in contact with the conservation officer, by phone, throughout the incident.
