MOUNT PEARL, NL — There were plenty of fast swims in the pool this past weekend as the Poseidon Swim Club sent 16 young athletes to a meet in Mount Pearl.
In what was the final meet of 2017 for the Carbonear-based team, several swimmers earned top three finishes and posted Champs times. Those times qualify them for special swim meets taking place in the new year.
Eleven-year-old Sarah Burt claimed a pair of first place finishes in 12-and-under girls breaststroke events — 50-metres (42.62) and 100-m (1:30.87). Her swim for the latter event qualified as a Champs time, as did her result in 200-m breaststroke (3:19.83).
In 13-14 boys, Noah Coombs placed second in 50-m backstroke (35.51) and third in both 50-m butterfly (33:16) and 200-m backstroke (2:45.45).
Mackenzie Sutton earned top three finishes in a couple of events. For 12-and-under girls, she was second in 50-m back (38.33) and 200-m individual medley (2:57.84).
Sutton and Burt were also part of a 12-and-under relay team that earned a third place finish in the 200-m event, joined by Ciara O'Keefe and Kendra Slade. Slade was among three new swimmers who competed at the meet. The others were Colby Sharpe and Daniel Drake.
Julia Verge joined Burt, Slade and Sutton for a 12-and-under t-shirt relay event. That group placed second with a time of 3:57.82. In the 15-and-over t-shirt relay event, Abby Trask, Jorja Bennett, Megan Smith and Rylee Moores joined forces to finish third (3:35.86).
In other results, 13-year-old Bennett reached a Champs time at the 15-year-old level in 400-m freestyle (5:30.83).
Poseidon's next meet will take place next January in Mount Pearl. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the club can contact Kevin Bennett at 589-8851.
