Province wins opener in Canada Games men's hockey

Newfoundland and Labrador got the start it wanted in the men’s hockey competition at the 2019 Canada Winter Games Saturday, winning its opening game by a 5-3 score over the Northwest Territories in Red Deer, Alta. The Territories obviously weren’t happy with one of the Newfoundland goals, appealing to the referee as Dawson Crane (3), Ryan Greene (13) and team captain Zach Dean (12) celebrated. The province, which is entered in C Pool with NWT, the Yukon, Nunavut and P.E.I., was scheduled to play Nunavut Sunday night. The opening ceremonies were held Friday night, a select few sports such as hockey started Saturday, but the Games kicked into full swing Sunday.
