2 firefighters in critical condition, several others injured in fire in Los Angeles

Officials said the telephone poles were engulfed in flames.

Seven firefighters have been injured, including two critically, following an explosion in Los Angeles, according to the LA Fire Department.

The explosion occurred when 12 firefighters responded to a semi-truck fire early Thursday morning, the department said.

The semi-truck “doesn't run on diesel or gasoline, but it's actually … powered by compressed natural gas,” Fire Department Capt. Eric Scott said at a news conference.

Two 100-gallon tanks were in the truck, one of which exploded while firefighters were fighting the blaze, Scott said.

A nearby transformer exploded and burst into flames as high as telephone poles.

Scott said authorities do not know the driver's condition or whether the vehicle was moving at the time of the fire.

This is a growing story. Check back for updates.
